VPN in Android not working – solution

Many people have experienced problems with the native VPN functionality in Android. In our case we have experienced the annoying problem that we can connect through VPN (PPTP VPN type) from our Android devices to the VPN server but within a few minutes the connection drops. We have finally found a solution to this problem.

Solution to VPN in Android connection problems

We figured out that the problem with the VPN disconnection was due to wrong DNS settings on our Android devices. When you go to Settings -> Wireless and networks -> More settings -> VPN -> Add new VPN network, on your Android device, make sure to tick the “Show advanced alternatives” box. After that you need to enter a DNS server in the field for that. You can enter 8.8.8.8 which is Google’s DNS server.

Done! Now your VPN connection should hold on and stop disconnection after a few minutes.

Other VPN settings in our case on the Android device:

  • Type: PPTP
  • PPP-encryption (MPPE) enabled.

MPPE encryption is also enabled on our VPN server. Good luck!

VPN server: The one included in Asus rt-n66u router (the black knight)
